More sales don’t automatically mean more traffic or more leads—they mean more closed deals at the end of the funnel. If you only focus on filling the top of the funnel without optimizing the middle and bottom stages, you’re wasting your budget. This article shows which strategies actually lead to more closed deals and how to measure success. It doesn’t matter whether the deal is closed online, over the phone, or in a face-to-face meeting—the underlying mechanisms remain largely the same.

What Really Matters in Sales and Marketing

Sales is the sum of all actions that turn a prospect into a paying customer—regardless of whether the sale is made in the online store, via a quote, or during a face-to-face conversation. Unlike metrics that focus solely on reach or engagement, only one figure matters here: the actual revenue per campaign, channel, and time period.

Practical Tip: Before launching new campaigns, it’s worth taking a look at the conversion rate of existing leads. Often, the greatest potential lies not in generating more leads, but in better follow-up on existing inquiries.

That’s exactly why successful teams distinguish between top-of-funnel metrics—such as clicks or impressions—and bottom-of-funnel metrics—such as conversion rate or average order value. Only by keeping an eye on both sides can you identify where in the process revenue is actually being lost.

Lead Quality Over Lead Quantity

Conversion Rate as a Key Metric

Bottom of the funnel before top of the funnel

Follow-up on Existing Contacts

Average Order Value at a Glance

Regularly Shorten the Sales Cycle

The Most Effective Ways to Boost Sales

Three key factors usually determine sales success: the quality of the leads, the speed of follow-up, and the clarity of the offer. An optimized sales funnel ensures that prospects aren’t lost between the initial contact and the offer, while automated reminders significantly shorten response times.

Quick response time to inquiries

Clear, comparable pricing structure

Retargeting for Visitors Who Left the Site

Upsell and Cross-Sell Offers After Purchase

Personal follow-ups with high-value leads

Using Cold Calling and Outbound Marketing Effectively

Not every sales process relies exclusively on inbound inquiries. Especially in the B2C and smaller B2B segments, targeted cold outreach via email can generate additional sales if it’s personalized and sent in small waves rather than as a mass mailing.

Small, personalized shipping batches

Clear benefits right from the start

Suggest a specific next step

Follow-up after three to five days

Tools and Automation for Scalable Sales Processes

Without software, scaling up quickly becomes a bottleneck. The right sales software automatically handles scheduling, sending quotes, and follow-ups, allowing the team to focus on meetings rather than administrative tasks.

Automatic Follow-ups and Reminders

Centralized Pipeline Overview for All Deals

Quote Templates with Tracking Functionality

Integration with Email and Calendar

Measuring Sales Success with the Right KPIs

You can only drive more sales if you regularly analyze the right metrics, such as ROAS, cost per lead, and conversion rate. A solid set of marketing KPIs immediately shows which channels actually lead to paying customers and where your budget is currently being wasted.

Compare ROAS by Channel

Cost per Lead Over Time

Conversion Rate by Lead Source

Include Customer Lifetime Value

Those who combine these levers shift the focus from pure traffic growth to what ultimately matters: predictable, repeatable conversions with a clear value proposition. A professional performance marketing setup consistently brings both aspects—reach and conversions—together. Ultimately, it’s not the loudest marketing that matters, but the process that turns a prospect into a satisfied customer with the least amount of friction—and it’s precisely this process that can be improved step by step once the right metrics are visible.

Common Mistakes That Prevent Sales Closings

A common mistake is an overly complicated offer with multiple options, which tends to confuse potential customers rather than convince them. Instead, using a clear, easy-to-compare structure significantly reduces the time it takes for a decision to be made. A low conversion rate on the offer page itself is also often overlooked, even though even small adjustments to the layout or the way the price is presented can noticeably improve the conversion rate.

Another mistake is giving up too soon on hesitant prospects. Many deals are only closed after several points of contact, which is why consistent retargeting of prospects who have dropped off often yields better results than acquiring entirely new leads.

Don’t make your offers unnecessarily complicated

Check the conversion rate of the offer page

Don’t give up on prospective buyers too soon

Use Retargeting for Hesitant Prospects

B2B and B2C Sales: A Brief Explanation of the Differences

In the B2C sector, a single person often makes a spontaneous decision, which is why short sales cycles and emotional triggers are the most effective levers. In the B2B environment, on the other hand, multiple people are usually involved, and rational arguments—such as customer references or a clear unique selling proposition —carry more weight than a short-term price advantage.

These different decision-making processes also result in different key performance indicators: While in B2C the focus is often on the conversion rate per campaign, in B2B the value of individual, long-term customer relationships tends to be more important.

B2C: A person’s spontaneous decision

B2B: Multiple decision-makers involved

B2C: Emotional triggers have a stronger effect

B2B: Testimonials and USP Are More Important

In marketing, planning without a revenue target is like planning into thin air. The revenue target is the strategic anchor from which all campaign decisions are derived—from the budget and channel selection to the specific KPIs. But in practice, this connection is often missing: creative teams focus on building awareness, while the sales team waits for deals to close. This article shows how companies systematically translate revenue targets into measurable marketing actions.

What is a sales target in marketing?

Here’s what it’s all about:

Sales Goals in Marketing: A Brief and Clear Explanation

Distinction from Related Concepts

The foundation of every marketing strategy

A revenue target defines the total revenue a company or product line aims to achieve within a specific time period—usually a quarter or fiscal year. In marketing, it serves as an overarching planning metric: budget frameworks, conversion rate requirements, and lead targets are calculated backward from the revenue target. A distinction is made between absolute targets (e.g., €2 million in annual revenue) and relative growth targets (e.g., +25% compared to the previous year). Both types require a clear breakdown of the necessary marketing efforts.

Core Principles of the Revenue Target

A valid revenue goal follows the SMART principle: It is specific (a concrete number, not “more revenue”), measurable (a transparent KPI path), achievable (based on historical data and market potential), relevant (linked to company goals), and time-bound (a clear timeframe). Companies that consistently apply these criteria avoid the most common pitfall of marketing planning: ambitious goals without a clear operational implementation plan. A revenue target without a backward calculation isn’t a goal—it’s a wish.

Distinction: Revenue Goal vs. Marketing Goal vs. KPI

The revenue target is at the top of the goal hierarchy. Below that are marketing goals such as “Increase brand awareness” or “Increase the share of new customers,” which support the revenue goal. KPIs, in turn, are the operational metrics used to track progress—ROAS, CPA, conversion rate, CLV. These three levels must be logically linked: A revenue target of +40% cannot be achieved through awareness campaigns alone if there is no conversion optimization goal behind it. The clarity of this hierarchy determines the coherence of the entire marketing strategy.

The Importance of Sales Targets for Brands

Keep in mind:

Sales targets in marketing strengthen the brand and customer loyalty

Direct impact on brand awareness and conversion

Long-term growth always pays off

Revenue targets create accountability and make marketing measurable. Without a defined target, every campaign remains open to subjective evaluation—but with a revenue target, it’s clear whether a particular initiative has made a contribution. For brands, this means that marketing budgets and campaign strategies must be based on realistic revenue expectations, not on gut feelings or historical spending.

Facts and Figures: What Research Shows

The numbers speak for themselves: According to a 2024 McKinsey analysis, companies with formal revenue goals in marketing achieve, on average, 19% higher budget efficiency than those without structured goal planning. A HubSpot survey of 1,400 B2B marketers shows that teams with documented revenue targets are 2.3 times more likely to rate their annual budget as “well spent.” In e-commerce in particular, the link between revenue targets and campaign management is well established: 78% of profitable online stores with annual revenue exceeding €10 million work with quarterly ROAS targets derived directly from their revenue plan.

Link to the marketing budget

Ideally, the marketing budget is derived from the revenue target, not the other way around. A company aiming for €1 million in revenue and, based on experience, achieving a 4:1 ROI will need approximately €250,000 in marketing spend. This logic—where the goal defines the budget—is more professional than the traditional “we take 10% of last year’s revenue” model. For growing companies in particular, goal-based budget planning is the decisive difference between stagnation and scaling.

Leadership Based on Numbers Rather Than a Focus on Creativity

Strong marketing organizations lead with data. That doesn’t mean ignoring creativity—it means placing it within a measurable framework. Performance marketing without a revenue target is like driving without a destination: you’re moving, but you don’t know where you’re going. Executives who consistently use revenue targets as a starting point can justify budgets, align teams, and clearly document successes.

Strategic Deployment: Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up Goal Setting

Here’s how it works:

Clearly define your goals before you start

Integrate the revenue goal into the marketing mix in a targeted manner

Test, measure, and continuously optimize

There are two basic methods for translating revenue targets into marketing KPIs. The top-down method starts with the overall revenue target and breaks it down into individual channels: a target revenue of €1 million, of which 40% comes from performance marketing, 30% from email marketing, and 30% from organic channels. Each channel is thus assigned its own sub-target and budget.

The bottom-up method starts with the available resources and calculates the realistically achievable revenue potential: If the team can generate 5,000 qualified leads, with a conversion rate of 3% and an average order value of €800, this results in a revenue potential of €120,000. Both methods have their merits; professional marketing teams combine them to verify plausibility.

The OKR (Objectives and Key Results) framework has proven to be an effective structured framework for revenue goals in marketing. For example, the objective might be “Double revenue in the DACH market,” and the key results are measurable: “Achieve a ROAS of 4.5,” “Keep CPA below €35,” “Increase CLV by 20%.” OKRs create transparency and focus—they link the revenue goal to day-to-day marketing decisions.

Specific calculation examples illustrate the process: Revenue target of €1,000,000, average order value of €200, number of purchases required: 5,000. With a conversion rate of 2.5%, 200,000 qualified website visitors are needed. With a CPC of €1.20, this results in a paid traffic budget of €240,000—or you’ll need to generate some of the traffic for free through organic growth, content marketing, and SEO.

Step-by-Step: Translating Sales Targets into KPIs

The backward calculation from the revenue target to operational KPIs follows a clear pattern. Step 1: Set the revenue target (e.g., €500,000 in Q3). Step 2: Determine the average order value (AOV)—based on historical data or industry benchmarks. Step 3: Calculate the number of purchases needed (€500,000 ÷ €150 AOV = 3,333 purchases). Step 4: Set the conversion rate and determine the required traffic (3,333 ÷ 2% = 166,650 visitors). Step 5: Allocate traffic across channels and derive budgets per channel. Step 6: Set a ROAS target and define it as a weekly performance KPI. In practice, this process takes two to three hours—but it saves weeks of course correction if targets are missed.

Common Mistakes in Goal Setting

The biggest mistake is skipping the backward calculation: Teams set a revenue target but continue to work with the same budgets and channels as the previous year—without checking whether this setup even makes the new target possible. The second common mistake: overly optimistic conversion rate assumptions. Anyone who assumes a 5% conversion rate when the historical rate is 1.8% will inevitably miss the revenue target. The third mistake: a lack of channel attribution. If it’s unclear which channel contributes what share of revenue, it’s impossible to make budget decisions aligned with the target. Clean UTM tagging structures and a consistent attribution model are therefore not optional—they’re mandatory.

Key Insight: The revenue target is not the end point of marketing planning—it is the starting point. All KPIs, budgets, and channel decisions must be calculated working backward from the revenue target, not forward from the available budget.

Best Practice Examples: How Leading Brands Use Sales Targets

Here’s how it works:

Clearly define your goals before you start

Integrate the revenue goal into the marketing mix in a targeted manner

Test, measure, and continuously optimize

Successful brands treat revenue targets as a strategic compass for all marketing decisions. Zalando uses channel-specific ROAS targets derived directly from the annual revenue plan—each performance team knows exactly how much revenue its campaigns must contribute. Salesforce consistently works with OKRs and links marketing KPIs such as B2B lead generation and MQL volume directly to the quarterly revenue target. HelloFresh optimizes its CPM and cost per lead on a weekly basis based on the current revenue forecast—if targets are met, the budget is increased; if there’s a deviation, course is immediately corrected. Gymshark combines influencer marketing with precise ROAS targets for each collection launch, enabling it to demonstrate the direct revenue contribution of every creator partnership. What all these companies have in common is that they view the marketing budget not as an expense, but as an investment with a calculated return.

Zalando and HelloFresh: Data-Driven Sales Management in E-Commerce

Zalando publishes quarterly performance reports that highlight the close link between marketing efficiency and revenue growth. ROAS is not treated as a lagging metric, but rather as a leading indicator: As soon as ROAS falls below the target value, campaigns are reallocated within 24 hours. HelloFresh, on the other hand, uses cohort analysis to compare the customer lifetime value (CLV) of new acquisition cohorts against the revenue target on a weekly basis. If a cohort’s CLV falls below the threshold, the acquisition strategy for that segment is immediately adjusted. This approach makes it possible not only to plan revenue targets but also to manage them in real time—a decisive competitive advantage in fast-moving markets.

B2B Approach: Salesforce and the MQL-to-Revenue Chain

In a B2B context, the link between marketing activities and revenue is less direct—sales cycles take longer, and multiple touchpoints influence the purchasing decision. Salesforce has therefore established a detailed MQL-to-revenue chain: Starting with the quarterly revenue target, the required pipeline value is calculated in reverse, which in turn determines the necessary MQL volume, and finally the required marketing activities per channel. This methodology is particularly relevant for SaaS and enterprise software companies, where a single deal can be worth €50,000 or more—and where a lack of revenue target tracking can quickly lead to six-figure budget misallocations.

According to a Deloitte study (2024), companies that consistently derive their marketing goals from their revenue targets achieve, on average, a 23% higher marketing ROI than companies that do not formally link their goals.

Conclusion: Revenue Goals as the Foundation of Every Marketing Strategy

Conclusion:

Sales targets are indispensable in modern marketing

Think strategically, implement consistently

A clearly defined revenue target is essential for professional marketing. It enables budget justification, KPI derivation, channel prioritization, and transparent performance measurement. Whether top-down or bottom-up, whether OKRs or traditional goal-setting—what matters is that the marketing team always knows what revenue contribution it is expected to make. Leading with numbers trumps creative gut feelings—not because creativity isn’t important, but because only measurable goals generate real learning curves. Brands that consistently follow this approach optimize faster, waste less budget, and scale more sustainably.

What Is Profit in Marketing? Definition and Classification

Here’s what it’s all about:

Profit in Marketing: A Brief and Clear Explanation

Distinction from Related Concepts

The foundation of every marketing strategy

In a marketing context, “profit” refers not only to the accounting surplus but also to the measurable value that marketing activities contribute to a company’s success. This includes direct revenue generated by campaigns, indirect gains from brand strength, and long-term profitability through customer loyalty. The key factor here is the return on investment (ROI)—the ratio between the marketing budget spent and the profit contribution generated. Modern performance marketing makes it possible to analyze each touchpoint for its profit contribution and to manage budgets in a data-driven way. It’s important to note that short-term revenue and long-term profit are not always the same thing.

Core Principles of Profit-Oriented Marketing

Profit in marketing isn’t generated by maximizing revenue, but by optimizing margins. This means that it’s not the campaign with the highest click volume that wins, but the one that delivers the highest contribution margin after all costs have been deducted. Three basic principles guide this approach. First: Factor in all costs—media budget, agency fees, creative production, shipping, returns, and a proportionate share of overheads. Second: Prioritize segments by profitability, not by volume. Third: Combine short- and long-term perspectives, because branding investments often don’t translate into measurable profit contributions until 12 to 24 months later. According to McKinsey, companies that consistently apply these principles report a 15 to 25 percent increase in marketing efficiency compared to purely revenue-driven approaches.

Distinction: Marketing Profit vs. Accounting Profit

Accounting profit reflects the surplus remaining after all costs for a fiscal year have been deducted. Marketing profit is defined more narrowly: It measures the incremental profit contribution directly attributable to marketing activities—that is, the added value compared to a scenario without the campaign in question. This incremental nature is crucial because a portion of revenue would have been generated even without advertising (organically, directly, or through repeat customers). Good marketing teams use holdout tests and geocontrol tests to isolate the true incremental profit contribution and distinguish it from organic growth. Only this distinction makes marketing budgets truly justifiable to the CFO.

Why is a profit-driven approach crucial for marketing teams?

Keep in mind:

Success in marketing creates a direct competitive advantage

Measurable impact on revenue and reach

Starting early pays off in the long run

Many marketing departments focus on reach, clicks, or leads —without knowing the actual contribution to profit. This is dangerous: A campaign with a high ROAS but low margins and a high return rate can actually reduce the company’s profit. Profit-oriented marketing works backward from the contribution margin and allocates budgets where the profit margin is highest. For executives and CFOs, this is the language that matters most—marketers who communicate in terms of profit gain strategic relevance within the company and secure budgets during economically challenging times.

Facts & Figures: What’s Missing When Profit Is Ignored

A study by Forrester Research shows that 58 percent of B2C marketing teams primarily optimize for click-through and impression metrics without considering the impact on margins. The result: campaigns generate revenue, but not necessarily profit. In e-commerce, for example, an aggressive discount strategy can drive ROAS up to 6 or 7—but at the same time, it can push margins below 5 percent and drive up the return rate. According to an analysis by IFH Cologne, around 40 percent of all German online retailers fail in the medium term because their marketing costs exceed the contribution margins they generate. Those who ignore profit are building on shaky ground.

Strategic Importance: Marketing as an Investment, Not a Cost Center

The paradigm shift from “marketing as an expense” to “marketing as an investment” is transforming the entire corporate culture. When marketing teams can demonstrate that every euro invested generates a quantifiable contribution to profit, budget discussions take on a whole new dimension. CFOs and board members think in terms of return on investment—a marketer who can demonstrate a marketing ROI of 180 percent has a seat at the decision-making table. Those who present only impressions and follower counts will always struggle to secure a budget. Studies by Gartner show that marketing departments with established ROI reporting structures receive, on average, 20 percent more budget during economic downturns than those without proof of profit.

ROI vs. ROAS: The Key Difference

ROAS measures revenue per euro spent on advertising, but says nothing about profitability. An ROAS of 4 sounds impressive—but if the product margin is only 20 percent, the business is operating at a loss. ROI, on the other hand, factors in all costs: production, shipping, returns processing, and agency fees. Only ROI shows whether a campaign is generating actual profit. Professionals combine both metrics to get a complete picture of campaign performance.

Attribution: Who owns the profits?

Multi-touch attribution is the ultimate test of success. Which channel actually triggered the purchase decision? Last-click models significantly overestimate the impact of performance channels and underestimate the importance of branding. Data-driven attribution—such as through Google Analytics 4—distributes the profit contribution more realistically across all touchpoints: from the first display impression to the final SEA click. Those who model attribution correctly make better budget decisions.

How do successful brands maximize profits through marketing?

Here’s how it works:

Clearly define your goals before you start

Integrate profit into the marketing mix in a targeted way

Test, measure, and continuously optimize

Profit-driven marketing begins with segmentation based on profitability. Not every customer is equally valuable—high-value customers with a high lifetime value deserve more intensive CRM marketing, while one-time bargain hunters may warrant a smaller budget. Pricing strategy is an underestimated profit driver: A five percent price increase can boost profit more than a twenty percent increase in revenue. Brand investments contribute to the price premium—customers pay more for brands they trust. Loyalty programs increase purchase frequency and lower acquisition costs, which directly improves profitability. Modern marketing mix models allow companies to model the profit contribution of each channel over the long term—even without cookies and taking into account branding investments that take months to pay off.

Step-by-Step: Incorporating a Profit-Oriented Approach into Campaign Planning

Building a profit-driven marketing strategy follows a clear process. Step 1: Track margins by product group and customer segment—without this data, every budget decision is made in the dark. Step 2: Calculate the lifetime value of the most important customer segments, ideally broken down by acquisition channel. Step 3: Determine the maximum allowable acquisition cost (mCAC)—this figure defines how much can be invested per new customer without jeopardizing profitability. Step 4: Evaluate campaigns based on contribution margin and incremental profit contribution, not just revenue. Step 5: Conduct regular channel audits and consistently reallocate budgets toward the most profitable initiatives. This process may sound time-consuming, but it pays off: Companies that implement it report a doubling of marketing efficiency within 12 to 18 months.

Practical Tips: Profit Leverage That’s Often Overlooked

Three Underestimated Profit Drivers in Marketing: First, return prevention—reducing the return rate by five percentage points through better product descriptions, size guides, or review management often improves profit margins more significantly than a new campaign. Second, price psychology: anchoring, bundling, and premium positioning can increase the average transaction value by 15 to 30 percent without incurring additional costs in the media budget. Third, reactivating inactive customers: The CLV of a reactivated existing customer is often three to five times higher than that of a new customer at the same marketing cost, because trust and product knowledge are already in place. Those who systematically use these levers increase marketing profit without increasing the budget.

Common Mistakes in Profit Optimization in Marketing

The most common mistake: using volume-based KPIs as a measure of success. Those who optimize for maximum click counts or the lowest CPC often end up buying unprofitable traffic segments. Second common mistake: failing to factor return costs and fulfillment expenses into campaign evaluations—especially in fashion e-commerce, this can ruin campaigns that look good on a revenue basis but end up in the red on the P&L. Third mistake: Measuring branding investments immediately against short-term ROI goals. Brand impact builds over months and often cannot be fully captured through direct attribution. Pausing branding campaigns after 14 days because the direct ROAS is low destroys long-term profit potential. A robust marketing mix model helps systematically avoid these mistakes.

Key Insight: Brands that know their lifetime value and base their bidding on it achieve, on average, 30–50 percent higher marketing profits than companies that optimize for short-term ROAS.

Best Practice: Maximizing Profit in Successful Campaigns

The most important thing:

Leading brands prioritize consistency

The courage to be different pays off

Define measurable KPIs from the very beginning

Amazon consistently relies on lifetime value-based bidding: Prime members are so valuable that the company is willing to invest significantly more in acquiring them than their first purchase would justify. Profitability is realized over the course of years. Apple maximizes profit not through volume, but through premium prices that are defended by consistent brand marketing—a margin strategy rather than a scale-based approach. Zalando has significantly improved its marketing ROI through structured A/B testing in budget allocation: channels are regularly evaluated based on contribution margin, not just revenue. Douglas combines loyalty data from its Beauty Card program with personalized CRM marketing, thereby achieving significantly higher repurchase rates among profitable customer segments. All four companies share a common principle: marketing is viewed as an investment, not a cost center.

Take Amazon, for example: Lifetime Value as a Strategic Metric

Amazon’s Prime program is perhaps the most impressive example of consistent CLV-based marketing. According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, Prime members spend an average of $1,400 per year—nearly twice as much as non-members, who spend about $600. Amazon is therefore willing to invest aggressively in acquiring Prime members because the lifetime value far exceeds the acquisition costs. This mindset permeates all marketing decisions: Which products are promoted? Which customers receive personalized offers? Answer: always those with the highest projected CLV. Applied to German companies, this means: Calculate the CLV of your most loyal customer segments and use it as the basis for bidding—even if the initial acquisition costs seem high at first glance.

The Zalando Example: Data-Driven Budget Allocation as a Profit Driver

Zalando faces a unique challenge: In the fashion e-commerce sector, return rates of 40 to 60 percent can turn any seemingly positive ROAS into a money-losing venture. The company has taken this into account and uses net contribution margin models that factor in returns, shipping costs, and processing expenses before evaluating campaigns. Specifically: Campaigns promoting products with a high return rate are automatically assigned lower bid rates. At the same time, Zalando invests more heavily in product categories with high contribution margins and low return rates—such as accessories and personal care products. The result is structurally higher marketing profitability without reducing total revenue. This approach can be applied to any company with heterogeneous product margins: Allocate your budgets based on profit contribution, not revenue volume.

“According to a Google/BCG study, companies that use data-driven attribution models achieve a marketing ROI that is up to 20 percent higher than companies that use single-touch attribution.”

Conclusion: Think of and manage marketing as a profit driver

Conclusion:

Profit is indispensable in modern marketing

Think strategically, implement consistently

Profit in marketing is not a matter of chance—it results when budgets are consistently allocated based on contribution margin and lifetime value, when attribution is modeled realistically, and when brand strategy and performance marketing work together as a system. Marketing leaders who think and communicate in terms of profit become strategic leaders within the company. The first step: Determine the margins of your most important product groups and calculate the lifetime value of your loyal customer base—then campaigns can truly be optimized for profit rather than just superficial KPIs.

Your online store has good products – but no sales? The problem is rarely with the product itself, but with visibility. Today, social media is the most direct route between product and purchase decision. TikTok Shop, Instagram Shopping, Pinterest, Facebook and YouTube Shopping offer you specific conversion levers that traditional display advertising does not provide. This guide shows you which channels are really worthwhile for your store, how to strategically set up social commerce and which mistakes to avoid right from the start.

Social commerce is growing faster than e-commerce as a whole. Shoppers buy directly in the app without leaving the platform. Those who invest in TikTok Shop or Instagram Shopping now will secure a competitive advantage before the channel is saturated.

Social commerce channels compared: which channel suits your store?

Not every social commerce channel works for every store. The choice of platform depends on your target group, your product range and your available content budget. The following table gives you a quick overview:

Platform

Conversion rate (guideline value)

Expenditure

Target group

TikTok Shop

3-7 %

High (Daily Content)

18-35 years, trend-savvy

Instagram Shopping

1,5-4 %

Medium (3-5 posts/week)

25-44 years, Lifestyle, Fashion

Pinterest Shopping

2-5 %

Low (pins are durable)

25-54 years, Living, DIY, Wedding

Facebook Shop

1-2,5 %

Low (catalog-based)

35-60 years, broad masses

YouTube Shopping

0,5-2 %

High (video production)

18-45 years, research phase

TikTok Shop currently achieves the highest conversion rates because the checkout process takes place entirely in the app and the entertaining commerce effect greatly increases the impulse purchase factor. Pinterest, on the other hand, delivers high ROAS in the long term with low ongoing expenditure, as pins can generate traffic for years.

More on the overarching social commerce strategy: Social media e-commerce: strategy and sales

TikTok Shop for your online store: How to set it up

<img src=”https://socialmediaone.de/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/zukunft-verwaltung-format-netzwerk-digital-vision-verteilung-bild-steigerung.jpg” alt=”<a href=”https://socialmediaagency.one/social-media-marketing-2026-the-complete-platform-strategy-for-u-s-businesses/”>Social media marketing</a> strategy visualization” class=”wp-image-101849 size-full” loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”447″ />

TikTok Shop is currently the fastest growing social commerce channel in Germany. The principle: products are linked directly in the video or livestream, the checkout takes place in the TikTok app. For stores, this means no media discontinuity and no shopping cart abandonment due to switching apps.

Setup requirements:

TikTok Business Account (from 18 years of age, DE company or DE residence)

TikTok Seller Center: seller-en.tiktok.com

Product catalog in CSV or XML format (or Shopify/WooCommerce plugin)

Bank details for withdrawals

At least 1 linked Creator account (can be your own)

Content strategy for TikTok Shop: The key mistake is to treat TikTok Shop like a classic store feed. TikTok users don’t buy because they are searching – they buy because they feel entertained and then act on impulse. Your content must therefore first and foremost entertain and only secondarily sell.

Successful formats include product demos in everyday situations, before-and-after videos, haul videos and livestreams with exclusive discount codes. The product link in the video (sticker) should not be the first thing the user sees – three to five seconds of entertainment first, then the link.

To the complete TikTok Shop strategy: TikTok Shop for companies: Setup and social commerce

Instagram Shopping: using the product catalog strategically

Instagram Shopping is more sophisticated than TikTok Shop and reaches a more affluent target group. The setup runs via the Facebook Commerce Manager because Meta combines both platforms under one roof.

Setup in five steps:

Create Facebook Business Manager and link Instagram account

Open Commerce Manager and create store

Upload product catalog (Shopify plugin or manual CSV upload)

Request Instagram Shopping for your account (verification by Meta, 1-5 days)

Tag products in posts, stories and reels

Instagram Shopping works particularly well for industries with high aesthetic standards: fashion, cosmetics, home, jewelry, food. The shopping tab is visible directly in the profile and attracts organic traffic to your catalog. Product stickers in stories and reels have a significantly higher click rate than external links in the bio.

Agency tip: Combine Instagram Shopping with retargeting. People who have seen your product in the feed but not bought it are the most valuable audience segment for Instagram Ads. ROAS values of 4 to 8 are realistic for well-constructed retargeting funnels – significantly better than cold acquisition campaigns.

To the complete Instagram shopping strategy: Instagram shopping for businesses: Setup and strategy

Performance marketing: ROAS and retargeting for your store

In most cases, organic social commerce traffic is not enough to scale a store profitably. Paid social is the extension of your organic strategy – and the lever with which you can control reach and conversions.

The three most important paid social levers for stores:

1. prospecting (cold traffic): Address new target groups via lookalike audiences (based on your existing buyers) or interest targeting. The goal is not immediate conversion, but attention. CPM optimization instead of conversion optimization in this phase.

2. retargeting (warm traffic): Re-activate website visitors, Instagram profile interactions and video views. This audience segment already knows your product – discount codes, social proof and urgency elements work particularly well here.

3. dynamic product ads (DPA): Automatically generated ads that show users the exact product they were looking at in your store. The highest ROAS in e-commerce paid social is almost always with DPA campaigns.

Realistic ROAS by phase: Cold traffic is often 1.5 to 3x – this is not profitable at first, but builds up your warm traffic pool. Retargeting delivers 4 to 10x ROAS. DPA campaigns with a well-stocked catalog and active pixel: 5 to 12x ROAS are achievable.

Details on the performance marketing strategy: Performance marketing: ROAS and conversion strategy

Content strategy: what really triggers sales

Social commerce content is not a glossy product catalog. The biggest mistake is to transfer advertising images from the print sector to social media. What triggers sales is authentic, product-related content that shows the benefits – not the product in a studio shot.

Content formats with a proven conversion effect:

Unboxing videos: More authentic than any advertisement. Customers see exactly what they are getting. Use real order videos from your customers (with permission).

Product demos in everyday situations: Show how your product solves a specific problem. No-frills, no studio, natural lighting.

User-generated content (UGC): Content from real customers has on average 28% higher engagement rates than brand content. Actively build a UGC pipeline.

Livestream shopping: Especially on TikTok. Discount codes exclusively for the livestream, limited quantities, live Q&A on product questions.

Comparison reels: Your product vs. alternative (fair and objective). Works particularly well in saturated markets.

Posting frequency by platform: TikTok: daily to 3× daily (the algorithm rewards frequency). Instagram: 3-5 times per week (feed + stories + 1-2 reels). Pinterest: 5-10 pins daily (the effort is low because pins are static). Facebook: 1-2 times a day is enough for organic reach in the store context.

Analysis and optimization: Which metrics really count

Many store operators measure the wrong metrics. Likes and followers are vanity metrics – they say nothing about the sales contribution. The metrics that count for your store:

Primary metrics (directly relevant to sales):

ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): Sales ÷ advertising spend. Minimum benchmark: 2x to break-even, target 4x+ depending on margin.

Conversion rate (CVR): Purchases ÷ clicks on your offer. On TikTok Shop: 3-7% is realistic. With external store link: 1-3 %.

Cost per purchase (CPP): What does a purchase cost you? Compare with your Customer Lifetime Value (CLV).

Add-to-cart rate: Indicates whether the product page traffic is ready to buy. Low add-to-cart rate with high traffic = problem with the product or the page, not with social media.

Secondary metrics (for optimization):

Video completion rate: crucial on TikTok and Reels. Below 20 % → Revise entry.

Link CTR: For external traffic (link in bio, story link): How many click on your store link?

Share rate: Shared content is the most favorable form of paid reach.

Tool stack for store analysis: Meta Business Suite (Facebook + Instagram), TikTok Ads Manager, Google Analytics 4 with UTM tracking for all social traffic sources, heatmap-based tool for the store pages (Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity free of charge).

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

After hundreds of e-commerce projects, the same mistakes can always be observed that burn up social commerce budgets without generating sales.

Mistake 1: Too many channels at the same time. TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube – everything at once is the surest recipe for mediocre performance on all channels. Start with a channel that suits your target group. Only scale up when this channel is profitable.

Error 2: No pixel, no tracking. If you don’t have the Meta Pixel and the TikTok Pixel on your website from day one, you will lose retargeting data that cannot be restored retroactively. Installing a pixel takes five minutes and is the foundation for all subsequent paid campaigns.

Mistake 3: Content without a hook. The first three seconds of a video decide whether to skip or watch. Without a clear hook (visual surprise, direct question to the user, before-and-after teaser), your potential customer will scroll on.

Mistake 4: Not linking organic and paid. Your organic content should convey the same products and messages as your paid campaigns. If you see the same content on both channels, you will convert faster.

Mistake 5: No social proof. Integrate reviews, UGC videos and testimonials directly into product content. A “4.8 stars out of 2,300 reviews” in the video overlay noticeably lowers the barrier to purchase.

Which social commerce channel has the highest conversion rate for online stores?

TikTok Shop currently delivers the highest conversion rates in social commerce because the checkout takes place directly in the app and the entertaining commerce effect encourages impulse purchases. Guide values: 3-7 %, depending on the product category. Instagram Shopping is often the better channel with a more stable ROAS for more affluent target groups aged 30 and over.

How much budget do I need to get started with social commerce advertising?

To get started, 500-1,000 euros per month is enough to collect reliable data. With less than 500 euros per month, the learning phases of the algorithms are too slow to make meaningful optimizations. The budget should flow 70% into retargeting and 30% into prospecting as soon as the pixel has collected sufficient data (approx. 50 conversions per week as a minimum for stable playout).

What is the difference between social commerce and traditional e-commerce marketing?

Traditional e-commerce marketing (SEA, SEO, display) focuses on users who are already searching. Social commerce generates demand where users are not actively searching. The customer journey is shorter: discover product → buy in feed. This reduces the abandonment rate because there is no change of platform. Social commerce complements traditional marketing, but does not replace it – the two channels intertwine.

Do I need TikTok Shop and Instagram Shopping or is one enough?

For most stores, one is enough to start with. TikTok Shop is suitable for products under 80 euros with high impulse potential (beauty, gadgets, fashion, food). Instagram Shopping is better suited to higher-quality products with explanatory benefits. If you use both channels, you need separate content strategies – don’t just cross-post the same content.

How do I measure the ROI of my social media measures for the store?

The primary KPI is ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): Revenue through advertising costs. In addition, you measure cost per purchase, conversion rate and the share of social traffic in total sales in Google Analytics 4. UTM tracking on all social links is mandatory so that you can distinguish which channel generates which sales. Organic social commerce influence can be made visible via Assisted Conversions in GA4.

E-commerce Design Agency – In times of increasing online commerce, a professional and successful online presence is essential. An e-commerce design agency helps companies build and maintain a strong online presence. In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the services offered by an e-commerce design agency, the importance of UI and UX, and the benefits of a consistent corporate design. Also, learn why working with a specialized agency can boost your company’s success in the long run. Read on and be inspired by the possibilities that an e-commerce design agency can offer you.

E-commerce design agency: what you should know

E-commerce has become much more important in recent years. Numerous companies realize that a strong online presence is nowadays essential for the success of their own business. An e-commerce design agency helps to build a professional and successful online presence.

What does an e-commerce design agency do?

The focus of an e-commerce design agency is primarily on the creation of advertisements as well as the appropriate creatives. It works closely with the customer to understand their individual requirements and goals regarding their online presence and to develop a customized solution. This includes, in addition to general store maintenance, the development of an eye-catching corporate design, the creation of an appealing and user-friendly website, as well as the optimization of the user experience within the store in order to noticeably increase online sales.

What solutions does an e-commerce design agency offer?

An e-commerce design agency takes care of the totality of all the design aspects required to optimize the user experience and the success of the store. This includes the following services: the totality of all aspects necessary for the design and success of an online store.

Advertising design

Creatives creation

Development of a corporate design

Website design

User interface optimization

What do we mean by “user interface” and “user experience”?

User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) are two terms used in connection with the design and development of software and web applications. Especially in e-commerce, these two factors are crucial for the success or failure of an online business. You can find out what these terms are all about here:

The importance of UI, UX and corporate design for your e-commerce success

User Interface (UI)

The “user interface”, or abbreviated “UI”, refers to the visual design of the user interface of a website or online store. It includes the design and arrangement of relevant elements, such as:

Menu / Navigation

Buttons

Text fields

Images

The goal is a simple & appealing design of the page, which also conveys a clear brand message. This allows the user a simple, intuitive interaction within the store.

User Experience (UX)

UX stands for “user experience” and refers to the user’s overall experience on a website. This includes, among other things:

Ease of use

Mobile friendly customizations

Loading times

Comprehensibility of the contents

Effectiveness with which a task can be completed

A professional e-commerce design agency first conducts a comprehensive target group analysis. Based on the information gained about the (future) users, the conception of the web application takes place as a basis for a targeted user experience.

How UI and UX can noticeably increase your revenue

An engaging user interface (UI) and positive user experience (UX) are critical to the success of an e-commerce business, as they have a direct impact on sales. This is done through the following factors:

Increase the conversion rate

Reduction of the bounce rate

Creation of a positive marketing identity

Increase search engine optimization (SEO)

Creation of repeat purchases

Why do I need a corporate design?

Furthermore, it is important that a brand has a consistent appearance across all platforms – both in design and communication.

The so-called corporate design is the key to building a consistent and thus recognizable brand. It involves the use of colors, fonts and graphics and should be applied consistently across platforms. A strong corporate design helps to sustainably strengthen customers’ trust in the company and increase brand awareness.

When should I hire an e-commerce design agency?

Especially when a company itself does not have sufficient experience in building a professional and successful online presence, a specialized e-commerce design agency should be consulted. Hiring an experienced agency is also recommended in the following situations:

Creation of a new online store

Redesign of an existing online store

Creation of advertisements

Low conversion rate

Internationalization

Conclusion: Working with an e-commerce design agency sustainably increases conversions and sales

A specialized e-commerce design agency will help you build a consistent and successful online presence. An agency develops customized e-commerce design solutions, which are tailored to the individual needs of the users. With the help of targeted UI and UX strategies, the user interface & user experience is also visibly improved. The application of a uniform corporate design across all platforms additionally ensures a strong recognition value and strengthens customers’ trust in the brand in the long term. Together, these measures bring about a noticeable increase in conversion rates and sales.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the economy. In Germany, for example, they account for over 60 percent of all jobs subject to social insurance contributions and generate more than half of GDP. The importance of SMEs for the German economy can therefore not be overestimated.

What counts as an SME?

But what exactly is an SME? According to the EU definition, the limit is 250 employees, although in Germany companies with up to 500 employees are also considered SMEs. However, the decisive factor for classification as an SME is not only the number of employees, but also the turnover or annual profit. For example, a company is already considered an SME if its sales do not exceed 50 million euros or its annual profit is 10 million euros.

The typical characteristics of SMEs are a high degree of flexibility, close customer ties and strong regional roots. Many SMEs are family-run and are characterized by innovative strength and sustainability. Due to their size and structure, SMEs can react very quickly to market changes and set new trends.

SMEs are thus the perfect alternative to large corporations and, above all, offer innovative solutions to the challenges of our time.

Interesting: Returns on sales

Here is another look at the average return on sales of medium-sized companies in Germany by sector.

Diversity in advertising – In 1950, advertising or moving film (i.e. video) was still something completely new for people. The roles of the individual protagonists were therefore clearly and simply structured. Until the 1990s, there was only one common ideal of beauty. But since the 2000s, views have been changing slowly, and in the meantime, in 2021, “diversity” is playing an increasingly important role in the media, whether in marketing or show concepts (such as TV). Today we take a focused look at diversity in advertising, with 3 recent examples from Zalando, Buffalo and Playboy.

Zalando: Urban since day 1

Zalando is now one of the largest fashion companies. Very early on, the company focused on unique characters instead of the classic “beauty ideal” in advertising.

In this way, the fashion company appeals to a very young, urban target group with its marketing communication as a whole. The advertising clips can be seen not only on TV or in streaming portals as an ad, but also on YouTube and Instagram you can watch the campaign again – cross-media.

Campaign: Your values. Here to stay – video

Here are a few more details for marketing nerds:

E-commerce net sales of zalando.de

E-commerce net sales of zalando.de in the period from 2014 to 2021 (in millions of euros).

More statistics can be found at Statista.

Top-selling URLs of Zalando SE

.
Which e-commerce generates the most revenue for Zalando, or which domain? This statistic compares the revenue figures for each country in 2019 (in millions of euros).

Also technical pioneers: example installment payment

Zalando is a pioneer with its clips, meets the needs of the youth. But not only the advertising makes the company or its image, of course, also the intelligent processes behind it.

For example, Zalando was one of the first companies to offer payment in installments. Simple but ingenious. A strong argument, especially for the young target group; after all, costs don’t have to be paid immediately, but are conveniently spread over several months.

By the way, any e-commerce can do that. A good tip to create simple, attractive advantages over the competition. Providers for installment payment in the online store are for example:

Klarna Slice

PayPal Installment

Second hand on Zalando

Brand new and super trendy, resell used clothing.

Buffalo campaign: 4 models + avatar

Fashion, the word already says, are products that are currently in trend. In other words, products that are “in fashion.” Therefore, no one is closer to the current trends, as the fashion industry. A practical example of diverse characters of Buffalo London.

In the new campaign “bolder than ever”, the shoe brand incorporates different characters, from the influencer on Instagram to the curvy model in the big city. In addition, another special feature never seen before in Europe, a virtual avatar name Ella.

Virtual avatars in advertising?

“Diversity” now no longer just means differences between people, meanwhile digital is becoming more and more a part of our everyday lives, thanks in part to the development of social networks.

The phenomenon of digital avatars began in 2019 in Los Angeles with Lil’ Miquela. She now has over 3 million people following her on Instagram. She is the first virtual avatar to make it to major campaigns in the meantime. Read more about her here in Fashion Magazine: Lil’ Miquela (portrait).

If you want to learn even more about the topic of digital avatars, we have a big list for you where you can find all the latest digital avatars (influencers), Lil Miquela, Ella Stoller, Zoe Dvir, Shudu, Bermuda & Co:

Virtual Avatars

Campaign: Bolder than ever

The advertising campaign itself was of course played out across all channels, with commercials, photos on Instagram and of course large ad in the online store.

Buffalo is best known for its high shoes (platform).

The first Playboy cover with Curvy Model

.
Change is not only in the new digital media, also classic magazines adapt their concepts to the thoughts of the modern age (give the community what it wants !).

Playboy is currently experiencing a real revival as a brand, especially among the younger target group under 22. The magazine is evolving and so there is no longer just the new regulation of no showing completely naked people – that means the aesthetics are on the rise – this month saw the first ever Curvy model on the Playboy cover!

Hayley Hasselhoff: Playboy Cover

The first curvy model on the Playboy cover is Hayley Hasselhoff.
Hasselhoff? Exactly! She is the daughter of one of the biggest icons there is in Germany. Her father, David Hasselhoff, is also a well-known person in the USA. Because he was the main actor of the hit series Baywatch. Along the way, of course, had made music and many other things. Now it’s his daughter’s turn and with the coup for the Playboy cover, she has set an absolute milestone.

Her first interview after the cover shoot:

Marketing: Offline, Online and Social

Money: costs, income, earning money

As a keynote speaker, we show up to 200 participants how to build a business in our workshop. One part of this is the Lean Canvas. A simple way to develop business ideas and test them. Then on the second day, 40 groups present their business ideas. A bit like “Höhle der Löwen”, you probably know the TV series. However, before it comes to the pitch, a solid business idea has to be in place. In this podcast episode we talk about that among other things.

Marketing: Offline, Online and Social

The marketing mix is increasingly diversifying. Every month, new portals, opportunities or even entire platforms are added, like TikTok at the moment. But also existing platforms expand the possibilities of advertising and sales, like currently Instagram Shopping. At the same time, offline marketing should not be forgotten: Trade shows, letters, and most importantly POS. We take you with us and give you some impulses for your marketing measures. Everything in the overall context of the business idea development in the Lean Canvas.

Money: costs, income, earning money

Making money at last! The last part of our Lean Canvas special is about finances. Of course, only extremely abbreviated, as you’ll see in the episode. Still, we’ll go into some, interesting revenue models that you might not have thought of for your business. Sales, licensing, freemium, a little insight into the world of revenue. These are also your final step in creating the Lean Canvas.

Native ads (native advertising or native display ads) refer to all paid advertising formats that are discreetly labeled as ads. They are part of performance marketing. Simply put, native advertising is advertising that does not look like advertising. Native ads offer minor disadvantages, but above all advantages. Did you already know? According to a white paper by AppNexus, the CTR of native display advertising is 8.8 times higher on average. According to Forbes, the purchase intention increases by 18% with native ads. We also always measure a higher CTR in our customer projects. What does this have to do with? Personalization of content, storytelling and more discreet communication channels: referral marketing. Why native advertising? What is native advertising? What is advertising?

Definition

We all know them: sponsored content. When reading online magazines, on social media platforms. Native ads nestle almost inconspicuously into the environment of the respective medium. Native ads are therefore both visually and personalized, with content adapted to the environment of the advertising measure. Native ads can be used in both online and print advertising.

Typical markings are:

“Sponsored content”

“Recommended for you”

…

When a user clicks on these ads, they are redirected to a third-party website/app. This is just one example of native advertising (native ads). As described, native advertising cleverly disguises itself in existing media formats. This includes aspects of design (color, font, font size, etc.), as well as targeting the audience.

In Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Munich, Hamburg and across Germany, native ads allow brands and companies to deliver desired content in a non-typical, promotional way. So unlike banner ads, native ads look like a natural part of the user interface. It therefore does not interrupt the UX (user experience).

70% of users want to learn more about products through content, not traditional advertising.

Native Ads:

Integrative advertising (unobtrusive)

Indirect, sales-promoting measure

Also for PR, online reputation, brand awareness

Why native ads?

In recent years, display ads have been the means to drive online sales. Banner blindness and ad fatigue are real and advertisers have a challenge to combat them.

We are all familiar with the phenomenon of overdosed advertising in city centers. Who notices individual posters anymore? On the Internet, too, users ignore banner ads or even block them completely with ad blockers. “Classic” display advertising in online marketing is becoming less effective (not less relevant) as users become more and more immunized. Native advertising arose out of the need to adapt to new user behavior.

Native ads are ads that don’t look like ads, or simply put:

In 1990 articles were bought in magazines, today in online magazines

Advantages & disadvantages of native ads

Here is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of native ads. Let’s start with the disadvantages first:

Disadvantages of this strategy: monitoring and time

Performance measurement

Time, work and costs

Hidden labeling

Performance measurement

Measuring the performance of native ad campaigns is one of the most difficult challenges to solve for each individual campaign. Precise statements about key figures such as return on investment (ROI) are difficult to measure.

Time, work and costs

Native ads also always mean storytelling. A good story and appealing design (e.g. infographics, etc.) require time and talent. If you “only” rely on social ads, a good, meaningful graphic is ideally enough.

Hidden labeling

According to our definition, native ads are all paid advertising formats that are discreetly labeled as ads. It is therefore all the more important that users are only confronted with online advertising that is fair, clear and appealing and really delivers added value. Such native ads are often labeled “too discreetly”, which is also a source of criticism.

Advantages of the strategy: personalization and CTR

Referral marketing

Customized content

Higher CTR

Customized content

Tailor-made native ad content is more trustworthy than traditional advertising, as you can see in the key figures on the market and the development of online advertising, as it is more targeted, informative and entertaining for the target group compared to traditional advertising. They encourage users to think and, as a PR tool, can also have an impact on reputation and brand image.

Referral marketing

75% of users engage with a topic when they are most interested in it (source: Reuters). This is precisely the time for native ads. Because it usually doesn’t matter whether the content is branded or not.

To make this work, you create a real, emotional connection with the user through content that is tailored to the personality of the user/target group, through appealing layouts and designs, as well as videos and infographics.

Higher CTR

As seen in the disadvantages, it is difficult to measure the exact success of native ad campaigns. What is easy to understand, however, is the higher click-throughrate (CTR) compared to typical display ads.

Another example? Clark+Meyler’s native advertising campaign for GE (General Electric, USA), reached 5.1 million people and required 416,000 clickthroughs. That is a CTR of over 8 %. The comparison with traditional display ad CTRs is exciting. In 2000, these were still as high as 9%, but by 2012 it was only 0.2%. This is why they are usually measured in CPM (click per mille). These key figures are based on clicks and impressions.

The more effective click rate for us is also directly related to the market key figures. How is online advertising currently developing?

Online advertising in Germany

Online advertising is growing in importance. The figures show this. In 2017, around 7.4 billion euros were generated with online advertising. In the same period, the figure for advertising in print media was EUR 8.7 billion. One year later (2018), it was already 7.9 billion (+ 500 million euros compared to the previous year; source: Federal Statistical Office).

Worldwide digital marketing

In 2021, online is expected to reach 52% of global advertising expenditure for the first time (source: Internet World). This is the general development of online advertising expenditure worldwide in the years 2014 to 2020, as well as a forecast up to the year 2024.

2014 – USD 146.62 billion

2016 – USD 191.87 billion

2018 – USD 283.35 billion

2020 – USD 332.84 billion

2022 – USD 441.12 billion*

2024 – USD 526.17 billion*

*Forecast from Statistia

Key figures USA: Share by sector

Native ads are not a new phenomenon, but they are becoming increasingly popular in companies. While many are still working on their Facebook account, some early adopters have been at it for some time. In the USA for many years.

Spending on native ads will rise to around 41.1 billion dollars in 2019 (no exact figures available yet). This means that native ads already have a market share of 61% in the USA when it comes to digital display advertising (source: eMarketer).

Native Ads: Examples

In the following, I would like to introduce you to a few new features and give you some ideas on how you can place native ads.

Online Magazine: Content Marketing

Focus, Ntv, Spiegel, Vogue, Bravo, in all magazines you will find “Recommended articles”. These are the big players. If you want to play out native ads, you prefer to use such online portals with a large reach and reader loyalty or SEO power(search engine optimization). If you want to build up a really effective network, you should use such A online media and also use B online media (i.e. smaller ones, such as blogs). These in turn refer to the articles or content placements in the large online portals.

In this way, the 1st page on Google gradually fills up with positive recommendations.

After the best family vacation I’ve ever had, I really wanted to tell you about my camping trip to the North Sea. We set off with our new roof tent to discover the sea … I found in a roof tent comparison…

Podcasts: Audio example

The number of podcast listeners is increasing from month to month. Millions in this country now follow their favorite podcasts on Spotify, Deezer & Co. If you have ever listened to American podcasts, then you know that native ads in the episodes are quite “normal”.

After having my car repaired, I was finally back on the road with my sports car at the weekend. The garage wanted to rip me off, so I did it myself. Have you heard of XYcars.com? Two weeks ago I went to the garage and they wanted to charge me hundreds of dollars. Do you know what I did? I went to XYcars.com and ordered the parts myself, for half the price. The team at Auto Shop makes it so easy to find the right parts…

Mobile Ads

Traffic is changing. While 5 years ago we still had over 80%, 90% of visitors on the majority of our customer projects who came via desktop PC (whether Mac, Windows, Ubuntu & Co.), today it is often 80%, 90% who surf on mobile. The market share for native ads, the:

The technical status of the end devices,

As well as data transmission

are increasing in relevance. If you want to advertise, you have to think mobile today. However, native ads still hardly play a role here, with only 8% of online marketers relying on native ads last year. However, a large proportion of advertising budgets are spent on video ads.

YouTube demonetizes Coronavirus – By monetizing on YouTube, creators (people who publish new videos) can earn money passively. This gives them the freedom to record new videos. A good principle that can also be exploited like in the case of Covid-19 (Coronavirus from China). Danger or “hype”? Today demonstrators show: whoever shocks gets clicks. Whoever gets the most clicks earns the most money. The calculation is that simple.

Coronavirus (Covid-19): YouTube blocks advertising revenues

However, there are also black sheep among YouTube users. We already reported about one case a few days ago, here we dealt with the hacked YouTube channel of a musician (confidential). Here a hacker took over the channel and directed the income to an account that is difficult to trace (or in other words: Youtube doesn’t care about 100.000 followers). Now there is a new phenomenon: earn money with “Cornavirus” (Covid-19) videos. Youtube is drawing consequences and stops monetization for all related videos. So all corona videos on YouTube will not be monetized.

A statement from managing director & owner Stephan M. Czaja in an interview for Business Insider. Since the article was so well received, here is an extra to the interview with more, detailed information about the demonetarization of Covid-19 videos on Youtube.

The important thing is not to panic. Compared to the annual flu epidemic, Covid-19 is a media hype, but not a threat. Why and how, we explain here in this article. But before we come to the analysis, here is an interesting Youtube Live Video with current Covid-19 cases in all relevant countries.

Infected in real time

Here you can see the number of infected persons or confirm cases in the live ticket. But is Covid-19 really dangerous? An example shows that much around the virus is much “noise and smoke”. Because, the normal flu wave in 2017/2018 alone has caused the highest number of deaths in Germany in the past 30 years, an estimated 25,100 in Germany alone (source: Tagesschau). Covid-19 has claimed “only” 1,000 lives – so Covid-19 is a worldwide hype and many people take advantage of it, not only the “news channels” – but more about that later.

How does monetization on YouTube work?

People who publish videos on YouTube and have many followers or views. That means, people who watch their videos bring cash money. Youtuber live from advertising interference. These advertisements are shown at the beginning of a video or as banners while the video is running. With each fade-in the Youtuber earns money. That means every time a person sees an ad. A youtuber earns even more when clicked or bought. However, the income is limited, under 100,000 views per video, only little money can be earned. Business is mass.

How much does one earn with one video view?

Depending on the subject matter, the merit varies. Youtuber, which discuss simple and frequently discussed topics videos in their videos, e.g. “Make Up” earn much less per call than for example Youtuber, which deal with a special topic, as well as real estate or capital investments gold, etc. Finally, each individual view is worth less than “only” 1 cent. The masses make the difference.

Whoever creates a video with 100,000 views has already earned 200-500 Euros.

Whoever publishes two videos every week earns accordingly (simply calculated) about 400 – 1.000 Euro. In addition, however, there are the new calls of the old videos, again 80 – 200 Euro more. In the coming week it is then already 400 – 1,000 euros for new videos and 160 – 400 euros for new calls of the old videos. Thus the own Youtube channel pays off fast, by passive income (advertising incomes and/or Monetisierung of the channel)

Which content works on Youtube?

There are two types of content that are frequently accessed. One form are very personal videos, with private content and emotions of people. This is also the origin of the phenomenon of “influencers”. The second form are shocking messages of death, war, quarrel and mourning at best, they provide the most hits, views and clicks. Content that is also known from the news.

<“Sensational” content

Coronavirus (Covid-19) as click trigger

Of course, people’s concern increases when they hear about the virus in all the news. Even though the number of cases is very small compared to the regular influenza that comes every year, there is constant media attention. On breakfast television, people talk about Covid-19 in the news, even late at night in talk shows.

Information is first searched for on the Internet, and the number of searches for Covid-19, or “coronavirus” in general, increases accordingly.

Visualization: Virus stem

Google also reacts in the search results

If you currently google for “Cornavirus”, you will not find videos and pictures suggested as usual. Also no “frequently asked questions” are shown, also no “similar search terms”. The search results currently show “help and information” from the World Health Organization (WTO) and “safety instructions” from the WTO.

Danger from cornoavirus is overrated

Anyone who thinks that the current virus wave that is the subject of worldwide attention is bad is wrong. It is relatively harmless, but it is a staple of news in all its facets.

You already knew that the strong flu epidemic in 2017/2018 has caused the highest number of deaths in Germany in the past 30 years. An estimated 25,100 people died from influenza at the time – in Germany alone! Corona is already at its peak has a little over 1,000 deaths worldwide (thus “only” 2% of the “regular” influenza victims, which alone in Germany). So the proportionality is utopian, considering the media time the virus is currently getting.

Conclusion: Youtube (Google) acts responsibly

While many are getting on the bandwagon of Covid-19 and using the current hysteria around the virus for their own profit, Youtube is reacting in an exemplary manner. By demonstrating videos related to the coronavirus, they are (at least) stopping the financial incentive for people to publish more content when it comes to pure “click fanaticism”.

Does the action remove the incentive of this disproportionate “sensational news” theme? Nevertheless, many people will want to collect clicks; after all, an above-average video (high number of hits) also attracts the attention of users in relation to their own channel.
