Import file list into Excel + Word – Export file names: How to do it

Today I needed again a file list in Excel. Importing and exporting takes a long time when you do it manually. You can easily import the file names into Excel and Word. Listing file names and reading them from folders is very important for many – for example – content marketing applications and saves a lot of time. Here is the answer.

Export list from file name or import to Excel

To put many files in a folder in a list (file names), you need to do the following. First, open command to merge the texts, as before. You can do this again with Ctrl+Shift clicks, then right click in the empty area inside the folder. Then open “Command Prompt”. Now enter the following:

dir *.jpg /w

The value *.jpg>/strong> stands for your desired file format (probably image files). /w outputs the file name.

You will now get all file names in the command window one below the other. You can copy and paste them with Ctrl+C. If you want a text file directly, enter the following:

dir *.jpg /w > images.txt

The value > images.txt outputs a text file.

Instructions: Export file names to list

To open your command prompt (Ctrl+Shirt+Right click):

All file names of the folder will appear in an overview:

Or get the names output directly to a text file:

If you have exported a text file, your result will look like this:

Set up Webmaster Tools Basics: Help for beginners of Sitemap for analysis

Search engine optimization becomes much easier for all online shop operators and bloggers with the free Google Webmastertools! Although many have websites, very few of them use software to optimize their own site for search engines like Google, Yahoo & Co. The better the own website is listed in the search engine rankings, the more reach the own site gets. Therefore it is essential not only to know your own produced content, but also its effectiveness and impact. Optimization is constant work, because once you have published new articles or products, it is advisable to check afterwards how they were placed and where there is further potential to attract even more visitors. In the new free YouTube Video Tutorial, I give beginners and novices a few first simple tips on how to use Google Webmastertools even without deeper SEO knowledge. Thereby 3 simple steps are enough!

+ Do you know?

Google Webmastertools Video Tutorial: What is it about?

If you want to learn more and if you are interested in Google Webmastertools, you can watch my YouTube video over 10 minutes to get a more detailed overview with helpful screenshots and of course detailed descriptions. Have fun watching it! If you have any questions, feel free to write me here in the blog in the comments or directly below the YouTube video. Follow me for new advertising agency tutorials! Lets start with crawling errors, search engine analysis and your sitemap.

Crawling error: broken links and 404 errors pages

On the first page, you will first see three different objects to the right of the menu. The crawling errors show links that lead to 404 pages, or error pages.

404 pages or error pages can be found here in the crawling errors and of course corrected manually in your own website or online shop. On the far right you can see the sitemap.

Sitemap: Ping for search engines on update

As a rule, the sitemap is only set up for new projects, it runs permanently. The sitemap helps Google to recognize when you publish new pages or new categories (e.g. WordPress). Without this sitemap Google would have to search your site on its own. Since you only have one of many billion websites, you can imagine the daily effort of a search engine like Google.

Search analysis: Rankings and reach

In the middle you will find the search engine analysis, here you have all important information about your rankings in the search engine.

+ Do you know?

Search engine analysis: recommendations for getting started

In the big overview you can see the clicks, impressions and the position.

Clicks: Actual visitors of a website

The clicks give you an indication of how many people have clicked on your page after a search query on Google.

Impressions: Appearances in the search results

The impressions show you how many people have seen you in the search engine results. No matter if they clicked on the link or not.

Position: Ranking in the search results

The position then displays the respective list placement on the pages in the search results. From position 1 to 10 you are on page 1, from 11am to 8pm you are on page 2 and so on.

Here you can observe perfectly indexed pages and of course the changes. Now we come to step 2:

search engines position change and page range

Two of the most important options in Google Webmaster Tools are comparing positions at different times and observing individual pages.

Position change: Comparisons by time

You can see the change of position directly in the overview, just click on “Periods” and then on “Compare Periods”. Now you can choose between 7 days, 28 days or a user-defined period. In the overview you can see how the clicks, the impressions or the positioning of your own web project have changed in the respective period.

Page reach: By keywords or single page

With a click on the pages you can see the achievements of your individual pages. Here you can see not only the single keywords and how much traffic a single keyword generates, but you can also see how much a page collects with all keywords. So you can see the success of a single page and also its average positioning in the search engine. Here you have a much bigger overview of your single page and the most successful pages of your website or online shop.

New look: Google Search Console

New look for Google Webmastertools! The most popular software for search engine optimization of online operators for detailed query of impressions, clicks and rankings has changed its look. The design has become more modern, with compatibility for mobile web viewing. We wanted to take a look at the most important changes and give beginners and newcomers an overview of the new design 2018 in the Google Search Console. Today, Sunday, we will take a look at the new user interface, but also at the most important settings for web site operators and online shop owners. If you want to advance your own search engine optimization, you have to deal daily with your own rankings, i.e. in positioning in the search engine, but also with various topics such as content marketing, site structure and also with backlinks and internal links. Today we will look at all the details, so that you have a comprehensive overview of the current possibilities with Google Search Console.

Merge multiple text files in seconds | Notepad++ Alternative

Today I once again encountered the problem in our advertising agency that I have to merge several text files into one. Therefore a small tutorial for merging text files. If you create a lot of content, you will often end up exporting several TXT files. These are then corrected by “Search & Replace” to standard errors. With mass text creation, for example by software, it can happen that errors are constantly repeated. These are double blanks or also errors that occur constantly like “test”. If every text has more than 1000 characters, plus HTML, YouTube embeddings, etc., mass replacement is worth its weight in gold, because it saves media managers a lot of time. In content marketing often the decisive factor for speed. With small programs like Notepad++ you can then easily use the “Search & Replace” function.

Text optimization – search engine optimization (SEO) with structure in texts

Good texts are essential for search engine optimization (SEO). Many people achieve good results by working simply and cleanly. A good structure of the texts facilitates the optimal placement in the search results. The advantage is obvious, the texts are reader-friendly (usability), but at the same time they are also better identifiable for search engines like Google. You can find the video directly under the basic structure or directly on Youtube. Do you already check your own rankings? In my new video tutorial I show the 3 basics for the free tool from Google: Webmaster Tools. It allows you to check search engine rankings but also comparisons of time periods and much more. Sounds interesting? It is! Watch here the free video about Google Webmastertools for beginners.

+ Do you know?

Basic structure of simple SEO texts – headlines and text length

heading 1 (h1) – title of the website, is only used once!

Introduction text – Approx. 80-100 words that summarize the upcoming text and its content in a short and concise way.

heading 2 (h2)

Heading 3 (h3) – Always as a subheading of h2, of course several of them can be used one after the other

Heading 4 (h3) – Always as subheading of h3

Heading 2 (h2) – Then the same structure follows, again and again

The optimal text length for websites – So many words a text needs

Tip! Texts should always be written in continuous text. They should always contain meaningful sections (paragraphs). Good sites have over 900 words of text. If you make good lists or long texts, use 50 photos, 20 videos or 3000 words.

question on YouTube: Images, alt attribute & SEO

I wanted to add these 4 steps for pictures in the article! Pictures are also an important element for search engine optimization. Not only do they make the content more interesting for your readers and thus increase the time they spend on your site, etc. (this is now also called Search Engine Expirience, a new important factor for the evaluation of sites in competition), but also in the image search results you attract new users to your site.

    1. Keywords in filename – Even before uploading you should have your keywords in the filename. Mostly they come from the camera and have names like “DCIM2053.jpg”. Rename your pictures directly before uploading, for example “berlin-innenstadt-fruehling-cafe-freund-freudin.jpg”
    2. Image Compression – Compress your images to optimize your loading times (pagespeed), instructions can be found in this tutorial from me (for Photoshop and online compression)
    3. alt-text – Use your keywords in the alt-text
    4. Don’t forget – Use your keywords in the surrounding text

Referral spam? Solution & Tutorial for your Google Analytics Account and FTP / .htaccess

Referral spam from landing pages like disturbs webmasters in their analyses, like in Google Analytics, enormously! But don’t worry, there are simple little tutorials that help to remove such spam from your own data. Already in June I wrote a small article about how to exclude spam pages via .htaccess. But since many people are working with Google Analytics, there is now a small update! I like to refer to the data of Ben Travis – who always updates the list of referral spam in his blog. There you can find all current sources of dubious visitors, respectively bots. Now to the crux: Remove referral spam in Google Analytics!

+ Do you know?

exclude, remove and block referral spam

What is actual referral spam? I love the internet! There are new ideas everywhere, this brilliant idea is from Russia: Referral Spam. Resourceful developers create landing pages. Every small webmaster is of course happy about every backlink, look at it, lands on a landing page. Not a valuable link. No valuable visitor. Only a landing page and a bot that crawls the pages. The principle behind it is as simple as it is amazing: By cleverly linking pages, you as a website operator will of course become aware of the new, visitor sources. And of course you will risk a look at them. In the end you will end up on a simple sales page, landing page, etc. There you will find the typical affiliate offers: travel, medication, etc. So the whole trick is to get you as a webmaster on the sites and sell something. Chapeau! Great idea, really.

Whoever then wants to analyze his visitors will get falsified data, no matter if visitors, duration of visit, origin, etc. Therefore we want to exclude this spam!

Google Analytics, general filters against referral spam

Open Google Analytics Dashboard. Here we go. First open your Google Analytics account. Click on Manage > ‘Select account

Add filter and enter data

Here you now add all lines of code. After each filter you have to add it to the individual website views (next but one picture):

  • Filter type: User defined
  • referral-spam-google-anayltics-new-filter-remove-block-out-exclude-02-settings-establishment-setup

    Current list of spam pages

You can find the latest list at Ben Travis from Viget. Meanwhile there are three small lists, because Google Analytics limits the input to 255 characters in the filters.

    #2 - UPDATE

    Add all filters, collect

Now you have created all filters and added them to the individual website views. Perfect.

Extra tip: Google Analytics: remove referral spam retroactively

Whoever has now fixed everything to avoid being disturbed by link spam has taken the biggest step. In 30 days the standard records of the target group and visitors of the website will be ‘clean’ again. If you still want to take a look back, e.g. to analyze the current page, you can apply the filter to the current data view. You can see how to do this here. First step, click Target Group > Overview. There you add a + New Segment.

    Add filter and enter data

Look at the screenshot of my Anaylitcs Accout. You exclude, as before, exactly the spam sources. This will ‘reduce’ your number of visitors (in the example on the right) to a real level, without bots.

Here you do not create three individual filters, but connect all three lines of code (point 2) with an AND. Afterwards you save your filter. You can add it as a segment in every website view. For example, if you have several pages.

Extra tip! Exclude the own IP (office, home, etc.)

You still make up a large part of your visitors yourself? Your own traffic also influences the Google Analytics data. There is a great solution for this as well, you can remove your own IP (of course others as well) from the website data view. To do this, you create a general filter in Google Anayltics > Manage, just like in point 1. You assign these new filters to the individual records of the account.

Now you have a small first season of great filters and much cleaner data to analyze your own website.

Exclude referral spam via .htaccess – The current list 12/2015

Unfortunately the wrong visits falsify your statistics. Therefore it is time to do something. How you can “protect” your website from this, also on pages and shops of your customers, is explained here:

    1. open / create your .htaccess
Tip: No idea about .htaccess & Co? A free .htaccess generator is available here
